PORTER / THURBER
Regarding the PORTER & THURBER families of Hartland, Niagara Co., New York: I am looking for information regarding Chester (E?) PORTER who was born at Hartland, Niagara Co., NY in 1814. Jane M. THURBER was born at the same locale in 1816. I have record (from the LDS site) that these two were married (once again, at the same locale) in 1836. I do not know who HIS parents are, or from where the came. HERS are documented, thoroughly. I believe that these two were the parents of AT LEAST one son, James PORTER (born Aug. 1846 in Niagara Co., NY). This man was my g,g,g,grandfather. He moved to Branch Co., Mich. (married Mary Jane DIAMOND 1852-1881, ther in April 1870), then on to Steuben Co., Indiana. This move tok place after his service in the Civil War. We have no specific War Service information. We also have nothing related to him from, his place of birth. I received this lead on his parents, from the marriage record to his second wife (Mary Thayer SHANK) from Branch Co., Mich c. 1894. The registry of St. Mark's Episcopal Church Lists his parents as: "C.E.PORTER & Jane H (THURBER) PORTER. Would someone be willing to look in the 1850 & 1860 Federal Census for this area, to see if they can find this family? This will help me establish a crucial link. PRATT, Calvin / HAWKS
Wilson, Niagara County, NY: Seeking information on Samantha HAWKS who married Calvin PRATT. They owned property, raised their children and are buried in Niagara County. (Samantha born in 1804 in CT, Calvin born in 1800 in VT). Have recently been provided information from "Landmarks of Niagara County", Edited by Will. Pool, 1897. There is a paragraph about Lorenzo PRATT on page 138 that discusses other family members. While discussing his father Calvin PRATT --- it says "His wife was Samantha, daughter of Joseph HAWKS, one of the first settlers of Wilson; she was a teacher there for many years." A search of the AIS New York Census Index - yields no records for any Joseph HAWKS from 1790 through 1830. The first mention is for 1840 - and that is in Putnam Co. Since I believe Samantha HAWKS was born in CT - then moved to NY later where she settled with Calvin PRATT - I searched the AIS for CT for Joseph HAWKS and came up with "zero" for 1790-1870. Tried Samantha HAWKS in NY -- zero. Tried Samantha PRATT in NY -- one - in Hampton, Washington Co in 1850. (Mine was living in Niagara Co). Tried Samantha HAWKS in CT -- zero. What am I not seeing here? Does anyone know of anyone named Joseph HAWKS in Wilson, NY? Does anyone have any information on this Samantha HAWKS who married my Calvin PRATT? Does the "teacher" clue help at all? Thank you. Seems I have a mystery on my hands at the moment - April 1999 - sent in by: Debbie Smith
