ELLIOT / SMITH
I need help in locating the marriage record for my husbands' ancestor JOHN ELLIOT. He was born about 1791 and I presume in the state of New York. He lived in Cambra (Cambrie) near Lockport . He had 4 children as follows: Daniel b 1811, Oliver Smith b. ?, Orlin b. 15 Aug 1818 in Cambra (Cambria), County of Niagara State of New York This info came from the Family Bible records. Cambra was probably near Lockport. Mary b. 1824. John ELLIOT was married to Mary SMITH daughter of Oliver SMITH and Mary HARRIS. John ELLIOT also fought for the Americans in WAR of 1812. Now my question is where do I write to for info on his marriage? His marriage would likely taken place prior to the birth of his first child in 1811. With hope that the names of his parents would be included on the record - March 2000 - sent in by: Louise Elliott

HARVEY
I have just learned that there are a number of Harvey's liisted in the 1860 Federal Census for Niagara Co. I have listed them below along with the page numbers and towns. If anyone can give me any information on any of them I would be most grateful. In return I have access to the Federal Censuses for the state of Pa. and would be willing to trade lookup time with anyone that may be able to help. As an alternative I am willing to pay any reasonable fees for any help. I am most interested in the Silas Harvey listed on pg. 549 Royalton. According to his War of 1812 papers obtained from the National Archives, my 3rd ggrandfather Silas Harvey b. 1795 Ma. was known to be in Niagara Co. in Oct. 1813 when he was inducted into the NY. State Militia. "He was mustered at Black Rock and after a few days marched north to Fort Niagara where he volunteered to cross over and occupy Fort George. He was discharged at Fort Niagara in Dec. 1813 a few days before the British burned Buffalo". He is next found in Crawford Co. Pa. in 1820 with wife Rachel Paden and two sons both under age 5. He migrated to Ashtabula co. Oh. about 1829. In 1855 Silas and Rachel divorced and both returned, separtely to Crawford Co. Pa. Here we lose track of Silas except for a brief notation in the Crawford County records of a refusal to serve as executor of his father's estate by his youngest son Benjamin Franklin Harvey in April 1862. There is a persistant family tradition that Silas "is buried up by Lake Erie". I think there is a possibillity that we may have found him up here in Royalton in 1860.

HAWKS / PRATT
Wilson, Niagara County, NY: Seeking information on Samantha HAWKS who married Calvin PRATT. They owned property, raised their children and are buried in Niagara County. (Samantha born in 1804 in CT, Calvin born in 1800 in VT). Have recently been provided information from "Landmarks of Niagara County", Edited by Will. Pool, 1897. There is a paragraph about Lorenzo PRATT on page 138 that discusses other family members. While discussing his father Calvin PRATT --- it says "His wife was Samantha, daughter of Joseph HAWKS, one of the first settlers of Wilson; she was a teacher there for many years." A search of the AIS New York Census Index - yields no records for any Joseph HAWKS from 1790 through 1830. The first mention is for 1840 - and that is in Putnam Co. Since I believe Samantha HAWKS was born in CT - then moved to NY later where she settled with Calvin PRATT - I searched the AIS for CT for Joseph HAWKS and came up with "zero" for 1790-1870. Tried Samantha HAWKS in NY --> zero. Tried Samantha PRATT in NY --> one - in Hampton, Washington Co in 1850. (Mine was living in Niagara Co). Tried Samantha HAWKS in CT --> zero. What am I not seeing here? Does anyone know of anyone named Joseph HAWKS in Wilson, NY? Does anyone have any information on this Samantha HAWKS who married my Calvin PRATT? Does the "teacher" clue help at all? Thank you. Seems I have a mystery on my hands at the moment - April 1999 - sent in by: Debbie Smith
HAWLEY
Gideon HAWLEY and Mary PARINGER HAWLEY were Quakers, married in Muncy, Lycoming Co, PA, in 1821. That same year they received a Certificate of Removal commending them to the Hartland Monthly Meeting in NY. I did find Hartland in Niagara Co, and I have sent a query there, but at some point Gideon and Mary moved to Shelby. I have record of 5 children-- Edward, place of birth unknown, Alfred (my gr-gr-grandfather) born 9-18-1823 in Lockport, and Martha (b. 1827), Henry (b. 1831), and Sarah (b. 1838), presumably all born in or around Shelby. Gideon, Mary and Henry all died in Shelby. Gideon died in 1858, Mary in 1883, and Henry in 1854. The rest presumably moved on. Alfred and his wife, Nancy Katherine MILLER (daughter of Peter and Catherine DYGERT MILLER, also residing in Orleans Co), to Erie Co. The base of my information comes from a handwritten record done by my Gr-Grandmother Margaret Adelia HAWLEY SPAULDING, Alfred's daughter. She was born in Erie Co in 1872, and her record was written in the 1930-40's. I have confirmed the Muncy, PA info from the Monthly Meeting Minutes, but am trying to confirm Gr-grandma's other information. Were Gideon and Mary still Quakers in Orleans Co? Had they, for some reason, been disowned? I have found the family in the 1850 census with the 5 children. Were there others? Any help with the HAWLEY'S would be greatly appreciated, and I'm looking at the MILLERS and DYGERTS, too. Thanks for any help - March 2000 - sent in by: Dawn Amos

HOWELL / VROOMAN
Trying to find more information on John HOWELL, his father, William HOWELL, or John's brothers, Daniel and Stephen HOWELL. I've been putting together all of the pieces of the HOWELL family together and this is the conclusion I have come to. Please understand this is only conjecture. Considering the Howell families on the NY 1840 census, I feel that William Howell (1771-1780) was the father of three sons, Daniel (1791-1800), John (1807) and Stephen (1801-1810). In addition, the enumerating of the households is rather meaningful. In the census, this is the order of the households as reported by the census taker: William Howell, Tice Ripson (brother to Catherine who married Stephen Knapp), Stephen Howell (William's son), John Vrooman, Sidney Vrooman, Solomon Moss, William Moss, Tewnis Vrooman, John Howell (William's son). William's son, Daniel, was here in the Porter town in 1830 and 1840, living about 1 1/2 miles east of the above. There is the chance that Daniel's wife was Sally who died 14 Feb 1847 of consumption of the blood. She was 46 (b 1801), was married and a housewife. It's possible that they had a daughter Mary E. who died 2 Feb 1847 of consumption at age 2 (b 1845). On the 1850 census there are two unaccounted for children who may have been Daniel's--Daniel, 22 (b 1828) who was a clerk for Peter Tower, and Nancy, 17 (1833) who was living in with the John E. McEwin family. - March 2000 - sent in by: Michele Howell Dipert, 208 Windcap Drive, Apex, NC 27502

"Landmarks of Niagara County" edited by William Pool, 1897,
Part I, page 177: Regarding land between Niagara Falls and Lewiston, Augustus Porter settled there after 1800. Among his neighbors were William Howell and Joseph Howell.
Part I, page 242: Regarding Town of Cambria, William Howell bought the farm of Philip Beach on Howell's Creek in 1808 and built the first saw mill there. He also kept a tavern. Nathanial Cook married on of William's daughters. (Note: I have no idea where Howell's Creek would have been. I don't find any creeks at all in Town of Cambria.)
Part III, pg. 82: Daniel Howell was born in Niagara County, NY, August 26, 1827, a son of Daniel and Sarah (Hill) Howell. Daniel Howell, Sr., was born in New Jersey and came to Porter, NY, when a young man and bought a farm and spent his last days in Canada. Mrs. Howell was born in Ireland and died in Porter, NY. [That was probably the Sally Howell who died in 1847, Town of Porter]. Daniel Howell, Jr., was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools; his first business experience was as a clerk for Peter Tower of Porter, and in 1851 he moved to Buffalo where he clerked for several years; was with Pratt & Co. twenty years, and later with Walbridge & Co. and in business for himself. In 1893 he came to Wilson, where he lives a retired life. He has married twice, first to Letitia Sylvester on May 4, 1856; they had two children, one died in infancy and Daniel E., who died in Chicago, age thirty-two. Mrs. Howell died in 1891 and in 1896 he
married, May 21, 1896, Rachael M. (Case) Cramton (born October 16, 1830), widow of Dr. E. H. Cramton of Wilson. Dr. Cramton was a veterinary surgeon for thirty-five years in Wilson, and a resident there for forty-four years; he was born October 18, 1824 in Genesee County, married November 28, 1854, and died January 20, 1894. Mrs. Howell's father, Deacon Luman Case, was born in Granby, Conn., and came to Wilson on foot when a young man, settling on a farm where he lived and died. He served as postmaster for several years and poormaster, was deacon in the Presbyterian Church and elder and chorister for several years. He was also a stockhholder in the Union school and trustee many years.
