1897 Biography - George W. Batten

Batten, George W., a son of Joseph and Anna (Hawkins) Batten, was born in Lockport, N. Y., February 22, 1856. His father was the first Democratic sheriff ever elected in Niagara county. His mother was born in England and immigrated to this country in 1837. Mr. Batten is a very popular citizen, having been deputy sheriff for three years, undersheriff for three years and elected sheriff for a term of three years. He served five years as the chairman of the Democratic County Committee and is now a member of the State Committee from this Congressional district. He is now engaged in the insurance business and represents some of the soundest and most reliable companies. He is a member of the Exempt Firemen's Association, Masons and a director in the Niagara Protective Association. Mr. Batten is personally a very popular, public-spirited gentleman and a good citizen.
