Biography - John Wesley Bickford

Dr. John Wesley Bickford was born on May 30, 1848, in Keene, Iona County, Michigan. He grew up mainly in Orleans County, New York, after 1860, after his mother died and his father moved back to New York. He was educated at Albion Academy in Albion, New York, and attended Medical School at the University of Buffalo Medical School, graduating in 1881. He practiced medicine in Lockport, New York, beginning in 1882, and also practiced in Somerset and other small towns in Orleans County.

John was a member of the Niagra County Medical Society and was Physician of Lockport from the spring of 1889 to August 1, 1891. He was a Mason, Red Jacket Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, Ames Chapter #88, and in the Genesee Commandery #10, Knights Templar and John Hodge Lodge #69. At the time of his death he was a jail physician and medical examiner fgor the Ancient Order of United Workmen. He died on January 30, 1911.

He married Fannie Gibson, born April 4, 1858. She died at Gasport, Town of Royalton, Niagra County, New York, on March 6, 1959, at over 100 years of age. They had no children and both are interred at Cold Springs Cemetery, Lockport.

Persona John was the son of Guilda Ann Stisser and Samuel E. Bickford. Guilda (or Guida) was a sister to my great grandfather. She, with her other sister, Maraget, and their hiusbands moved to Iona County, Michigan, in about 1848. Both Margaret and Guida died in about 1857 in Marengo, Calhoun County, Michigan. She died of consumption.
